I just opened your RAW file into Darktable, and with no adjustments I come with an image more like your 'proper2.jpg' (just a tiny bit darker). If this isn’t working right for you let me know and I’ll include some screen captures. All saturation-related 'changes' comparing to old behavior are expected, as the old behavior changed saturation in a non-uniform way across the tones. Re: Color Management + Darktable dull images. Note there is an ‘invert mask’ option that will come in handy.ĭarktable is all non-destructive editing, so experiment without worry of ruining the original. Hover over the options to see what they do. Click on that ‘off’ and you should see options including ‘drawn mask’ and click on that. Just under that you’ll see ‘blend’ and by default it’s set to ‘off’. Within that module you should see the options size, saturation, brightness and mix. I like to use masks with the ‘soften’ module. Next, select a module you’d like to apply. Select an image you’d like to work with and click ‘darkroom’ in the upper right corner. (I’m in Linux Mint 17 but the interface should be the same). The interface takes a little getting used to but it sounds like you already know how to import an image into Darktable and are running the same version I am. These masks I’m referring to are not a separate module, it’s a function available within most modules. Similar to using a large aperature for a shallow depth of field. If applied using a Drawn Mask, the effect can be used to subtly mitigate a busy or cluttered background and draw the viewer’s attention to the subject. Works well in conjunction with vignetting. Soften: Applies a defocusing effect to an image, a more creative module good for conveying a softer dream-like effect. It tends to draw a viewer’s attention towards the center. More often than not I would use Lens Correction to remove this effect on a wide-angle shot but on some photos it’s desireable. Vignetting: (Sounds like ‘vinaying’), this darkens the edges of an image. One could use Drawn Masks to make a subject really pop out by making the background monochromatic, but you’d be better off using the more advanced selection tools available in a raster graphics editor such as Gimp. If applied using a Drawn Mask it can also be used to restore some color to an over-exposed sky. Some images just need a little extra bump up on the saturation and that’s where this module comes in. Velvia, Vibrance and Shadows & Highlights typically handle Saturation. Drawn Masks are great for images that have a specific regions in need of adjustment or to enhance a subject somewhat lost in a busy background.Ĭontrast Brightness Saturation: I usually use levels to adjust contrast and brightness. It’s an option under ‘blend’ and available on most modules. For some images, there’s a few more modules I like to use, often in conjunction with a new Darktable feature called Drawn Masks that allow one to select the regions of the image to apply an effect. For most images, the 8+ modules I’ve already discussed bring them up to par.
